PALAZZO BEMBO, VENEZIA
A NEW
EXHIBITION CENTER IN VENICE
After years of
neglect, Palazzo Bembo is finding back to its original atmosphere. It is
becoming the home again of the arts, culture and education. Under a new
ownership, the decision has been made to restore Palazzo Bembo and to make room
for exhibitions; beginning this year in cooperation with la Biennale di Venezia
and with the hosting of two world class exhibitions. The exhibitions in Palazzo
Bembo will be organized by the Dutch NonProfit Organization GlobalArtAffairs
Foundation.
Palazzo Bembo
is located on the San Marco side of the Canal Grande, a few steps away from the
Rialto bridge. It was built in the fifteenth century by the noble family of
Bembo who had lived in Venice at least since the 7th centuries. Palazzo Bembo is a.o. the birthplace of Pietro
Bembo (1470-1547), a Venetian scholar and cardinal. He was an influential
figure in the development of the Italian language. Although Palazzo Bembo was
remodeled several times over the centuries, externally it still maintains the
original structure. The Palazzo is considered an example of the
Venetian-Byzantine or -Gothic style.
The 2
exhibitions which will open on June 4 2011, with a big 4 days long Palazzo
Bembo inauguration Pre-view party on May 31, June 1, 2 and 3, will put Pal azzo
Bembo immediately on the list of important exhibition venues in Venice. Both
exhibitions will display contemporary art of world class level, whereby the
exhibition “Personal Structures” will display 28 artists from 12 countries on 5
continents. All information about the exhibitions and Palazzo Bembo, you can

Ciascun artista in
mostra presenta lavori recenti, talvolta site-specific,
Esistenza in quanto esseri umani in uno specifico Spazio e Tempo.
Abramović (ex-Iugoslavia), Carl Andre (Stati Uniti), Herman de Vries (Olanda),
Toshikatsu Endo (Giappone), Johannes Girardoni (Stati Uniti), Peter Halley
(Stati Uniti), Joseph Kosuth (Stati Uniti), Melissa Kretschmer (Stati Uniti),

Millar (Nuova Zelanda), Tatsuo Miyajima (Giappone), François Morellet
(Francia), Hermann Nitsch (Austria), Roman Opalka (Francia), Thomas Pihl
(Norvegia), Miriam Prantl (Austria), Andrew Putter (Sud Africa), Arnulf Rainer
(Austria), Rene Rietmeyer (Olanda), Yuko Sakurai (Giappone), Sasaki (Giappone),
SEO (Corea del Sud), Lawrence Weiner (Stati Uniti), Maik Wolf (Germania), Xing
Xin (Cina), Zou Cao (Cina).
riunire artisti diversi attraverso pubblicazioni, mostre e simposi.

Exhibition
„Wolfgang Joop, Eternal Love“
Organizer Ludwig Museum, Germany
Curator Beate Reifenscheid
Location Palazzo Bembo, Venice, Italy
Dates Open
for Public June 4th – November 27th, 10.00-19.00
In context of the 54th Venice Biennale 2011,
the exhibition "Wolfgang Joop, Eternal Love" at Palazzo Bembo will be
curated by the director of the Ludwig Museum Dr. Beate Reifenscheid. This solo
exhibition will present an overview of Joop's recent artistic work. The
exhibition space has 350 square meters, which will all together show an
exciting combination of sculptures and two-dimensional wall objects in a wide
range of materials, such as marble, batiste, fabrics, paper and metal. Most of the
works are from 2011 and were especially made for this exhibition, other works
were created between 2003 and 2010. The exhibition will be open from June
4th until November 27th 2011. Palazzo Bembo is located a few meters from the
Rialto Bridge, on the Grand Canal.
Joop addresses our human
existence through a combination of ’reality’ and ’dream’, making references to
pain and death, but presented in an aesthetically beautiful way. Classic
art-historical themes are addressed in a new, dream-like and experimental way.
Wolfgang Joop is not afraid of emotion; the artist says he loves the
"fairytale-like, even in abstraction." With this exhibition, Wolfgang
Joop aims to highlight the passion and beauty as well as the transience of life
and to show the public a possible, positive way of handling these general
topics every human being has to deal with.
Art, for Joop, is the
expression of an aesthetic, a life-embracing state of mind and that this world
in its constant change is beautiful and should be savored. The promotion of multicultural
dialogues will improve social relations across national borders. "For me,
art is something that has to do with emotions, dreams and fears. I use things
that are common to people but with a twist of irritation, something familiar
but not too familiar."
His sculptures and fabric
pieces show contrasting colours of black and white, as well as themes of love,
existence, solitude and death, he uses familiar icons and symbols but with a
twist. "The duality of life is another aspect of my work. It's like you
can only know beauty if you know ugliness. You can only know luck if you know
misfortune." For instance, in "Eternal Bride," Joop depicted a
skeleton bride surrounded by cherry blossoms and sparkling jewels. "Cherry
blossoms are very fleeting, while skulls can last thousands of years. The
skeleton brides mean that love is not forever but death is everlasting."
In 2010 two catalogues have been published
about the work of Wolfgang Joop. In cooperation with the Ludwig Museum, a new
extensive catalogue of his Venice exhibition in Palazzo Bembo will be
available.
